Vehicle Area Networks - VAN

Definition

A vehicle area network is a local area network in and around a moving vehicle. It enables devices in and around the vehicle to communicate, either directly connected or through wireless protocols. A vehicle area network consolidates traffic from all the various devices and routes them over a network.

With In Motion Technology's Vehicle Area Network, a vehicle is transformed into a fully managed IT asset by creating an end-to-end system that enables the seamless extension of the corporate network to mobile professionals working in the field.

Technology

At the center of our Vehicle Area Network (VAN) is the onBoard Mobile Gateway, bringing together wireless Local Area Network (wLAN) direct connections and wireless Wide Area Network (wWAN) technologies, to create a truly mobile service platform with the ultimate in high-performance location-independent mobility.

The in-vehicle component of the Vehicle Area Network is based on wLAN technologies such as industry-standard 802.11 protocols, Bluetooth or direct connections such as serial and Ethernet. The unparalleled wWAN connectivity is supplied through a range of wireless technologies, such as cellular data network backhaul, WiFi including 4.9Ghz, WiMax, and support for soon to be available spectrums like 700MHz. The Gateway is designed in a modular fashion so that both the wLAN and wWAN components of the Vehicle Area Network can be upgraded as new technologies become available. This unique combination of capabilities ensures that users have anytime, anywhere access to their data assets.

Cognitive Wireless System

At the core of the end-to-end system enabled by the Vehicle Area Network is a Cognitive Wireless System. This Cognitive Wireless System consists of patent pending software components encompassing our ruggedized onBoard Mobile Gateway, the onBoard Session Manager software, and onBoard Mobility Manager software.

The onBoard Session Manager enables the organization to manage security, connection policy, data synchronization, as well as the seamless transition across any wireless network.

The onBoard Mobility Manager software is designed to be deployed in the network operations center. Its purpose is to allow operators to proactively manage the Mobile LAN services. Its capabilities include configuration management (including support for new network types), proactive health monitoring, and trouble shooting, as well as performance and traffic accounting management.
