Company Overview
Brief History
In Motion Technology was founded in 2002 by a team of seasoned telecommunications professionals driven by a single vision: To enable mobile data communications to be flexible, easy-to-use extensions of corporate networks.
By focusing on public sector communications, including emergency response and other municipal fleets, where the need for improved communications is mission critical, In Motion Technology is revolutionizing public safety communications and making a difference in communities across North America.
For the past decade, public safety organizations have been deploying a variety of new, mobile applications and devices, including dispatch, ticket writing and vehicle monitoring systems, video surveillance and medical devices. Yet, as these technologies emerge, organizations lack access to a single wireless network that provides the coverage and capacity necessary to access and transmit data from these devices reliably.
As a result, many agencies use a variety of approaches that are prone to congestion, coverage gaps, lack “interoperability,” and fail to provide seamless, effective, user-friendly, mobile data communications.
To address this need, In Motion Technology’s founders established four principles that have guided product development and the company:
- Mobile networks need to enable a variety of devices and applications. Teams in the field use laptops, PDAs, VoIP phones, and a variety of specialized devices, including law enforcement and medical equipment. To be effective, a mobile communications solution needed to enable all of these devices to communicate to headquarters and with one another;
- Mobile communications should not be constrained to any one wireless network, but should use the best available network in any given situation. Although many wireless networks are now available to crews in the field -- including cellular CDMA and GSM, 700 MHz, municipal WiFi, WiMax and others -- no one wireless network has the coverage, bandwidth and reliability to enable truly seamless communications in the field. Mobile network solutions should use the best available wireless network, and seamlessly switch between networks to ensure that communications go through every time.
- Mobile networks need to be easy to deploy and use. Emergency professionals in the field need to focus on their missions – protecting the public and saving lives -- and not their communications devices. Solutions need to be easy to install, reliable and worry-free.
- Solutions need to pay for themselves in improved communications, response times, operations, productivity and costs. Cost effective is not enough. Mobile networking solutions need to improve productivity and asset use, extend vehicle lives, save fuel, reduce communications costs, and improve emergency outcomes.
In 2005, In Motion Technology launched their suite of mobile, wireless products. The onBoard™ Mobile Gateway and onBoard™ Mobility Manager provide an end-to-end mobile communications solution for public safety and other municipal fleets.
The onBoard™ Mobile Gateway is installed in emergency vehicles to create a mobile “vehicle area network,” enabling multiple devices to connect simply and seamlessly. The Gateway then senses and selects the best available wireless network to enable these devices to transmit and access data with unmatched security and reliability. It is easy to deploy, reliable and worry-free.
To provide critical, real-time information to operations command, In Motion Technology launched the onBoard™ Mobility Manager, which continuously gathers and analyzes information from Gateway equipped vehicles to enable headquarters personnel to access to real-time information and manage networks, vehicles and other assets to peak efficiency.
These solutions are transforming the way emergency organizations communicate and operate. Today, more than 120 organizations across North America use In Motion Technology solutions to improve communications, operations and response times, and save lives.
